Abstract

This study was intended to investigate the effect of the ice-applied mouth care for patients with acute myelogenous leukemia after intensive remission induction chemotherapy. The subjects were consisted with 16 patients with acute myelogenous leukemia who were admitted in St. Mary¡¯s hospital with chemotherapy by idarubicin and Ara-C. They were conveniently divided into two groups (an experimental and control groups of 8 individuals, respectively). Ice-applied mouth care was provided for experimental group 4 times a day by reseracher. Their oral cavity status and feeling of oral cavity comfortness were evaluated by using questionnaires of Beck(1979) after chemotherapy The data were analyzed by t -test. The results were as follows : 1. The feeling of oral cavity comfortness of patients with acute myelogenous leukemia of the experimental group were significantly higher in second, third and fourth week after chemotherapy than that of the control group( P<.05). 2. The oral cavity status of patients with acute myelogenous leukemia the experimental group were significantly better in seond, third and fourth week after chemotherapy than that of the control group(P<.05). 3. The feeling of oral cavity comfortless and the oral cavity status of patients with acute myelogenous leukemia were statistically correlated. In conclusion the ice-applied mouth care on the oral cavity in the patients with acute myelogenous leukemia is considered to prevent chemotherapy induced oral complication and promote patient¡¯s comfortness.
